Bridging the Homework Gap: MELT’s Online Homework Platform Empowers Ethnic Minority Students in Hong Kong

In the diverse community of Hong Kong, education is an important pathway for ethnic minority members to unlock their full potential. However, the challenges faced by these students, especially when it comes to mastering the Chinese language, can often seem daunting. Hence, our center has pioneered an online platform that is transforming the homework experience for ethnic minority primary and secondary school students - with a particular focus on tackling Chinese assignments.

The key to our approach lies in the power of social media. By leveraging the ubiquity of Facebook Messenger, we created an accessible homework help system that caters directly to the needs of our ethnic minority students.

When students encounter difficulties with their Chinese homework, they simply snap a photo or screenshot and send it to us through the Facebook chat. Our dedicated team of volunteers, fluent in both English and Cantonese, then support into action. Using a combination of text, photos, and even voice recordings, they walk the students through the solutions, ensuring that the pronunciations and explanations are crystal clear.

This multi-modal approach is particularly valuable for ethnic minority learners, as research by the University of Hong Kong has shown that visual and auditory aids can significantly enhance language acquisition. By allowing students to re-listen to the Cantonese pronunciations outside classrooms, they can reinforce their understanding and build confidence in their Chinese abilities.

But the benefits of this online platform extend far beyond just homework help. As the Hong Kong Unison report highlights, the lack of culturally-sensitive educational resources is a major barrier for ethnic minority students. Our Facebook-based system addresses this gap by providing a safe, supportive, and culturally-inclusive environment where students can ask questions, receive personalized attention, and feel empowered to overcome their academic challenges.
